OSCAR JEROME SUN FOR SOMEONE

Any part of a healthy music diet should include some Oscar Jerome. This young artist represents some of the best contemporary London sound you can find, in the same camp as the likes of Puma Blue, Mom Tudie, Marie Dahlstrom, Zola Courtney, Tom Misch etc. So yeah, long story short, this new one from Oscar Jerome is right up our street. ‘Sun For Someone’ is a commentary on climate change and environmental activism, just as we’ve recently heard from the likes of Her Songs and Feng Sauve. As ever, Jerome’s jazz-guitar sits at the heart of this track, along with a brutally deep bass line and dynamic jazz percussion. Traces of the South Londoner’s other project, the afrobeat collective Kokoroko, can be heard throughout this track, like threads of gold woven into this glistening jazz tapestry. As you may gather from the animal-headed humanoids in the politically-charged and beautifully choreographed music video, ‘Sun For Someone’ envisions the end of humanity. In Oscar Jerome’s own words: Once we are gone the earth will right itself and carry on like it always has. The Sun will keep rising for someone, be it animal or planet. It just won’t run on the watch that we keep for our stubborn and unadaptable lifestyles. We often forget we are just a spec in time.” - Hannah Thacker [Photo credit: Denisha Anderson]
